Through the spoken word, the body, colors and form, the artist talks with the world. He/she creates beauty and reveals it to observing eyes. In Sanskrit the essence of beauty is called Sri and it represents abundance, dignity and the sacred. As John Friend says, in the practice of yoga we confront the body and the emotions that emerge freely, celebrating in this way the uniqueness and diversity of artistic expression in movement. It is a balance between forces. It means recognizing our points of weakness but, also the explosion of grace which happens in some other place within us at the same time.
Each position is an opportunity to enact our personal learning and concurrently communicate in a creative manner with our bodies. Who are we? What are we? What is our relationship with the world? The technique of each asana, done with a precise alignment, is an important aspect of the practice but it risks taking away from yoga a large part of its significance if it becomes the only aspect of it. The other side is the poetic expression, which is intrinsic to every position, in which the body loses the separation between the Self and the space that surrounds it, losing itself in its true nature which is silence and expressive joy. In this way, the poses are a vehicle which brings subtle changes in our awareness. Forward poses open us to the emotion of abandonment and giving oneself. Backward poses speak to us of new horizons full of treasures. Each one of our senses is a doorway to experiencing the heart.
